Family of Slain Lesedi Secondary School Learner Shares Grief and Calls for Change in Exclusive Mamelodi News Interview.

The Lethabong community in Pretoria East continues to mourn the tragic loss of 19-year-old Grade 11 learner Lethabo Mokonyane Matula, who was fatally stabbed outside Lesedi Secondary School on June 17, 2025, shortly after completing his final midterm exam. In an exclusive interview with Mamelodi News, Matula’s sister and family shared their profound grief, their pursuit of justice, and their vision for preventing future tragedies, as the community rallies around them ahead of the next court date.

Matula’s family remembered him as a vibrant soul who brought joy to those around him. “One of our favorite memories is when Lethabo would spend hours laughing and joking about his latest tech gadgets,” his sister shared with Mamelodi News. “He had a way of making everyone feel included and loved.” Lethabo’s passion for technology and trading inspired his family, with his ambition and determination encouraging them to pursue their dreams relentlessly.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested two Grade 12 learners, both aged 19, in connection with the murder, which preliminary investigations suggest stemmed from a prior bullying dispute the family believed had been resolved. The suspects appeared before the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on June 20, 2025, facing murder charges, with the case now set for its next hearing on September 1, 2025. The ongoing legal process has been emotionally exhausting for the family. “It’s draining,” they told Mamelodi News. “We’re focused on seeking justice for Lethabo, hoping the outcome brings some closure.” For them, justice means holding those responsible accountable in a manner that reflects the gravity of the crime.

Adjusting to life without Lethabo has been a painful journey. “We feel his absence most during family gatherings and special occasions,” the family said. “It’s hard to see his empty room or not hear his laughter.” To cope, they have leaned on counseling, open communication, and a supportive community. “The community has been amazing,” they noted. “Friends, neighbors, and even strangers have reached out. It’s helped us feel less alone.” Financial support has also been crucial in covering expenses related to the case.

The family expressed deep hurt over the lack of remorse from the suspects’ parents. “The parents of the killers never bothered to come to our house to say sorry,” they shared, underscoring how this absence of empathy has deepened their pain.

In their interview with Mamelodi News, the family called for stronger measures to address bullying and enhance school safety. “We’d like to see more counseling services, support groups, and community initiatives to prevent bullying and violence,” they urged. They emphasized the need for education and awareness to foster safer school environments, imploring policymakers and educators to prioritize student safety. Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane, who condemned the incident, reiterated that “schools must remain sanctuaries for learning, not scenes of brutality.” The Gauteng Department of Education has deployed its School Safety Unit to provide trauma counseling and is reviewing security protocols to prevent future incidents.

The family hopes Lethabo’s legacy will inspire meaningful change. “His story reminds us of the importance of kindness, empathy, and compassion,” they said. By sharing his story through platforms like Mamelodi News, they aim to raise awareness about the devastating impact of bullying and violence. “We’re hoping to heal and find closure,” they added, expressing gratitude for the community’s support and a commitment to honoring Lethabo’s memory by advocating for a safer future.

As the community prepares for the upcoming court date on September 1, 2025, at the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court, they stand united with Matula’s family, amplifying their call for justice and systemic reforms to ensure no other family endures such a heartbreaking loss. Mamelodi News remains dedicated to covering this story and supporting the community’s efforts toward healing and change.
