The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) confirms that a fire broke out at the Accident and Emergency Unit of Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital (TPTH) on April 19, 2025.
Fortunately, patients were safely evacuated, and there have been no reports of injuries or casualties. The department praises the prompt response of hospital staff and emergency personnel, who ensured the safe evacuation of patients to secure areas within the hospital.
Firefighters from the City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are on site, containing the fire and assessing the extent of the damage.
The department assures the public that the fire was confined to the Accident and Emergency Unit and did not affect other wards.
The hospital is currently not receiving patients and will remain on divert until further notice. The cause of the fire is being investigated, and the public will be kept informed of any developments.
