SANDF Deployment at #JusticeForCwecwe March Sparks Controversy.

SANDF Deployment at #JusticeForCwecwe March Sparks Controversy.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has been deployed at the #JusticeForCwecwe march in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, prompting mixed reactions from protesters and observers. The march, led by the Loyiso Lindani Foundation, a feminist non-profit organization, calls for justice for Cwecwe, an eight-year-old girl allegedly raped at Bergview College in October 2024.¹

Many have expressed concern over the use of military personnel at what is described as a peaceful protest. The presence of SANDF has raised questions about the state's handling of public demonstrations, as such deployments typically require high-level authorization, often from the President, for domestic operations.

*Unclear Reasons Behind Deployment*

The reasons behind this deployment and the full details remain unclear. The SANDF's involvement has sparked debate, with some questioning the necessity of military presence at a peaceful protest.

Cwecwe, the eight-year-old victim, was allegedly raped at Bergview College in Matatiele while waiting for her transport home. The incident has sparked national outrage, with marches held in various locations, including East London.

The #JusticeForCwecwe march aims to bring attention to the case and push for justice for the young victim. The deployment of SANDF has added a layer of complexity to the situation, with many calling for clarity on the role of the military in domestic operations.
