SABC Abruptly Cancels Afrikaans News Broadcast.
The Afrikaans TV news bulletins have suddenly disappeared from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) schedule, leaving viewers without any Afrikaans language news on Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 6.
There was no warning or explanation provided by the SABC before the weekend, leaving viewers unaware that the Afrikaans TV news bulletins would not be broadcast on Saturday or Sunday. The usual time slot for the Afrikaans news on SABC2 at 18:15 was left empty.
The abrupt cancellation of the Afrikaans news broadcast has caused confusion among viewers, who were accustomed to watching the news in their native language. The SABC's decision to remove the Afrikaans news bulletins without notice has raised questions about the corporation's commitment to serving the diverse linguistic needs of its audience.
On the evening of Friday, April 4, the SABC2 Afrikaans TV news reader, Willem Pelser, ended the broadcast with a casual "enjoy the weekend," which seemed like a normal farewell message. However, the previous Friday, Pelser had mentioned that the news would continue the next evening, implying that the Saturday broadcast was still planned.
