Murder investigation launched into death at Thabo Bester’s former prison.

Murder investigation launched into death at Thabo Bester’s former prison.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is closely monitoring operations at the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein following the death of inmate Mpho Mkhumbeni, who allegedly died after being assaulted by prison staff.

Mkhumbeni passed away last month, and while his family was initially informed he had suffered an asthma attack, a post-mortem revealed the cause of death as complications from pepper spray exposure and blunt force trauma.

The department has since confirmed that his death was not natural, but rather a case of murder. The Mangaung Correctional Centre, which has come under intense scrutiny in recent years, is the same facility from which convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester escaped in 2022.

The prison, formerly operated by private security firm G4S, has faced widespread criticism over its handling of security and inmate welfare.

The DCS says it remains committed to ensuring accountability and transparency as investigations into Mkhumbeni’s death continue.
