No taxi patrol is allowed to stop any private car except their own taxis.

Taxi association patrollers have no legal authority to pull over, impound or fine ‘private’ vehicles because they have passengers, or for any other reason(s).

According to Justice, Crime Prevention and Security they revealed that only Law enforcement agencies retain sole authority to pull over all motorists and if needs be, impound or issue fines for any Road Traffic Act violations.

Taxi association members are strongly warned against engaging in illegal activities, including pulling over, holding hostage, and financially extorting ‘fining’ private vehicles.

This comes after a trending announcement made by three of the Limpopo taxi association ordering workers, school children etc that as from November they must stop in using private cars and avanzas from point A to B.

Law enforcement agencies are called upon, as per their constitutional mandate and duty obligation, to maintain the rule of law and order, and to provide a specialised response to violent situations, if required - and ACT DECISIVELY against those committing these criminal offences.

Police commissioner General Masemola told Clement Manyathela on TheCMShow that taxi associations & patrollers have NO RIGHT to stop anyone on road, whether you give someone a lift or not. “They can patrol their taxis, not you as motorists”

The Commissioner said he will engage provincial commissioners to address the matter.
