A 58-year-old man arrested for rape.

JOHANNESBURG – A 58-year-old man has appeared briefly before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape and attempted murder following a horrific incident involving his one-year-old granddaughter.

According to court proceedings, the accused allegedly sexually assaulted the toddler at a residence in Claremont. The child was rushed to hospital and remains in critical condition, where she is receiving specialist medical care.

Prosecutors told the court that the accused is reportedly HIV-positive, a factor that has heightened public concern and outrage surrounding the case. Authorities have confirmed that appropriate medical interventions are being provided to the child as part of her treatment.

The case has sent shockwaves through the Claremont community, with residents and child-rights activists calling for swift justice and the harshest possible punishment. Community members have also urged authorities to prioritise the protection of children and strengthen measures to prevent abuse within households.

The matter was postponed to allow for further investigation and verification of outstanding reports, including medical and forensic evidence. The accused remains in custody, and the State is expected to oppose bail.

Police have reiterated their commitment to investigating crimes against children thoroughly, urging anyone with information related to abuse to come forward and report it through official channels.
