The Executive Director of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Jennifer Dikeledi Ntlatseng, has voiced unease about the increasing number of suspects dying in police encounters in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
During an interview, Ntlatseng described the killings as "concerning" that certain officers might be sidestepping the criminal justice process, possibly to cover up evidence or remove suspects linked to crimes.
According to IPID’s 2023/2024 annual report, KZN saw 166 deaths caused by police actions, making up 25% of the national total for such cases.
IPID has launched investigations into several incidents where suspects were killed in reported shootouts with police, aiming to address these troubling trends.
