An eThekwini Municipality water tanker driver is facing a murder charge after allegedly running over and killing a young boy in Adams Mission, south of Durban.

According to preliminary reports, the driver was allegedly attempting to flee from angry community members who accused him of selling water despite ongoing water shortages in the area when the fatal incident occurred.

The driver allegedly fled the scene following the incident.

In a statement, the eThekwini Municipality expressed its deep sadness over the tragedy, confirming that one person had lost their life.

The municipality extended its condolences to the family, friends and the wider community of the deceased.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened a case, and investigations are underway.

The municipality said it is fully cooperating with the police and has also launched its own internal investigation. It added that, because the matter is under investigation, it cannot comment further on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A municipal team has been deployed to Adams Mission to provide support to the bereaved family.

The municipality has also appealed to members of the public not to share videos of the incident on social media, out of respect for the deceased and the grieving family.
