According to reports, Hendricks was seated in the back of a car when a Toyota Hilux blocked their path, and masked assailants opened fire. Security footage captured the suspects fleeing the scene.

Hendricks, a prominent LGBTQ+ activist and religious leader, faced opposition throughout his career for promoting an inclusive interpretation of Islam.
